We in pest control are familiar with disease. While our services are based around comfort, many of the pests we prevent, trap, exterminate, or deter - such as cockroaches, bats, and rats - are known carriers of diseases and bacteria. It's why pest control is important for health and safety, not just avoiding bugs.
As a Jacksonville pest control company, mosquitoes are a frequent problem, and why we offer mosquito control service. They're also, more than any other pest in the world, known vectors for disease. So it makes sense to wonder and worry - can we get coronavirus in Jacksonville through mosquito bites?
What the Experts Say
COVID-19 is a new disease. It has only been around for a few months, and has spread quickly throughout the United States. Little is known about this disease.
So when experts were asked if coronavirus could be spread through mosquitoes, their answer has basically amounted to:
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The virus has thus far spread through human contact, and certainly spreads faster that way. As a result, there isn't any data that shows whether or not COVID-19 can spread through mosquitoes. The answer, according to most experts, is "we just don’t know."
So while that answer may be largely unsatisfying, there are a few things to note about mosquitoes and COVID-19:
- At the moment, you are far more likely to get it from person to person transmission. Staying home is the best way to prevent the spread of the virus.
- Mosquitoes may be able to carry the virus if they bite someone that has it and then bite you. Since it is a virus that affects the blood, it is possible that mosquitoes can carry the virus after feeding on someone with it and then pass it to your body. We won't know, however, until they study this further.
- However, even if it is not possible for mosquitoes to transmit the virus, mosquitoes in Jacksonville may carry other diseases such as West Nile Virus and Zika. It is still a smart decision to eliminate mosquitoes in and around your property.
- Eliminating mosquitoes can make living in your home more enjoyable, especially if you're working from home or avoiding public places.
Mosquitoes are a frequent problem in Florida, including - if not especially - in places like Jacksonville. They also carry disease. It's still too early to determine if they can spread coronavirus, but until we know, it is still a good idea to treat your property for mosquitoes and prevent the likelihood of bites and diseases.
Then, once we slow the person to person spread, we will likely learn more about if the virus can spread through other means and how to prevent them.
