Fire ants are a type of ant best known for their painful stings. Because of their reddish-brown color, they are also commonly called red ants. Because of their stings, infestations of fire ants are particularly dangerous to people and pets.
Where Are Fire Ants Found?
Since red ants like sun and warmth, they can be found throughout the southern United States. They typically build their nests in dry fields, but can also be brought into home landscaping on plants or grass sod.
Fire ant mounds are approximately 18cm high. Because they are not tall, people often don’t notice a fire ant mound until they step on it. These mounds average 61cm in diameter. Fire ant colonies, however, can grow until they extend across several properties.
In order to avoid red ant stings, you should be cautious when walking or sitting outside. Watch the ground for fire ant mounds and ant activity.
It is also possible for fire ants to enter homes and buildings through HVAC systems. Fire ants inside homes are a particular danger to residents and should be dealt with by a professional exterminator immediately.
Why Are Fire Ants Dangerous?
Fire ants attack by gripping their prey with strong jaws and then injecting venom through a stinger. People compare the feeling of the sting to an “intense burning,” a sensation that gives fire ants their name.
The venom fire ants inject is alkaloid and highly irritating to humans. It causes red bumps followed by white pustules which can become infected. For people who have an allergy to fire ant venom, a sting can even prove deadly. If you experience difficulty breathing, nausea, sweating, or severe itching after a fire ant sting, you should seek emergency medical help immediately.
Fire ant nests often contain thousands of ants. Stepping on a nest can mean hundreds of stings for the victim. Of the people who live in fire ant infested areas, it is estimated that 30-60% receive fire ant stings each year.
Fire Ant Infestations
In addition to being dangerous, fire ants can be very difficult to remove. Infestations can cover large areas and colonies can recover if they are not entirely removed. If you find fire ants in your home or yard, a professional exterminator can ensure your family and pets are safe.
